So you just installed your recommended windows update like a good little computer user, and now windows asks if you want to reboot. You answer “no, I’ll do it later” and the window goes away…for now. But sure enough, you’re in the middle of doing some work, and it comes up again. I can’t tell you how many times this has caused a zoom in 3D Studio Max or creating a path in Photoshop to mess up. For me (and I’m sure many users out there), it has become enough for me to sacrifice my system’s security and tell it not to install the update at all. After all, that little yellow shield never does anything but sit there…it’s much more friendly than the alternative. But no more! With just 3 clicks, you can prevent it from showing up until you decide to reboot on your own.

A quick note on security

A quick note on security

I saw this on Digg’s upcoming stories today: Totally complete sources.list for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, and felt a chill of terror. Visions of masses of users new to Ubuntu (and Linux in general), downloading this sources.list and using it, watching their computers melt, and blaming Linux overwhelmed my poor little brain.

Photoshop Tutorial: Faking Infrared Photography

Photoshop Tutorial: Faking Infrared Photography

Infrared photography is one of the most distinguishable types of photography. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the more expensive. If you’re using a film camera, it requires the purchase of filters and film, and if you’re using a digital camera, it still requires the purchase of a filter, and sometimes even taking apart your camera and removing the built-in sensor filter. And even then, you’re looking at incredibly long exposure times.
But with Photoshop and some time, you can recreate this effect with any exposure, and no filters or tinkering.

Paid to Blog (Honestly)

Paid to Blog (Honestly)

A hot topic of debate in the “blogosphere” has been the topic of advertising. Why do people look down on advertisements on blogs? Sometimes it’s because they’re intrusive. Other times it’s because there are more ads than content. But sometimes it’s because it’s hard to distinguish the difference between paid articles and actual content.

LCoTD: Basic File Operations

One of the first things you’ll need to do on a Linux system is manipulate files: copying, renaming, deleting, and so forth. There are a number of commands to perform these actions, and they are: ls (list files in a directory), cp (Copy a file), mv (rename (”move”) a file), rm (Delete (”remove”) a file), and ln (Create links (alternative names) to a file). In today’s installment, we will cover all of these commands

5 Must-Have Linux Desktop Apps

5 Must-Have Linux Desktop Apps

In my last Linux Command of the Day article, I covered how to install any software package in Linux. Shortly after, I found this post over at darxr.net. What a perfect chance to put your new skills to the test! (Yes, I know The GIMP is mentioned, and I previously said that it wasn’t enough for my needs. However, it is still a very powerful image editing tool that I use when I don’t need all the features of Photoshop)

LCoTD: Installing Software under Ubuntu (And Most Other Distros)

OK, so the thing that kept me from using Linux for the longest time was the fact that it had little to no software availability. Or so I thought. While it remains true that I use Photoshop and 3D Studio MAX above all else, and will never fully switch to Linux (sorry, The GIMP just doesn’t cut it for me), there is a wealth of software available written and maintained by the open source community. This Lesson will teach you how to install it.
